My proposal was about the transgender brain. I chose this topic because my sister is transgender and I wanted to learn more about it. The common stigma around the word ‘trans’ would be mentally ill and can be corrected through religion. Transgender people may be treated with disrespect and harassment from the people closest to them including physical harm, sexual abuse, bullying.
In my research I found out that the transgender suicide attempt rate is 40%, versus the US average of 4.6%. This fact didn’t shock me, but reminded me how alone and rejected someone can feel in a society where they are different. I hope that if people like my proposal, they will too want to help lower this percentage as much as possible. Another presentation many of my peers presented on was dissociative identity disorder, or split personality disorder. This is when a person is characterized by the presence of two or more distinct or split identities or personality states that continually have power over the person's behavior. I had a question about this: Can the personalities talk to each other? Also, some research explains that you can only have 2 personalities at a time, but some people have had even more than that, like the recent movie, Split. This movie really struck my curiosity- is it actually possible to have 23 different personalities?
