The most important thing I want people to take-away from our booth at exhibition is that a transgender brain has a different structure than males or females. Many think that Transgender is a choice, but their brain actually proves what they feel is unique and valid. During my research, I found brain imaging of white matter on brains that identify as male, female, homosexual, and transgender. Participants that transitioned from female to male and vice versa were not completely masculine, nor feminine, yet still identified with a gender different than their born sex. The structures were all different, regarding gender AND sexuality. It made me wonder if those are only 4 out of hundreds of genders and sexualities, how many other brains can we scan and justify our differences?
Another article I read said that genitals form first in the womb, and then the brain forms later on- kind of like how everyone has nipples, including men, but that doesn’t mean they are female. Also, people can start identifying as transgender as early as two, unlike previous theories that suggested it is formally triggered around puberty and surges of hormones. My positive statement I chose to write is Male, Female, Gay, Straight and Transgender brains are all different- because they literally are. I hope this will promote more understanding on the reality and factual evidence that shows we can’t change people’s gender or ‘scare them straight’.
