Project DescriptionIn this mini project, we learned about atoms, isotopes, nuclear fission and fusion, how power plants work, the pros and cons to many forms of energy like nuclear, solar, wind, hydro, fossil fuels, etc.
When debating, one group posed as pro, the other con. Each would speak their reasons and evidence for focus point one. Then they would pose the opposing team a question and vice versa. Repeat with focus point two. After that we do a grand crossfire of questions asked one side at a time. Finally we briefly state why we think we won. |
The Debate Questions |
Nuclear energy is a better alternative to fossil fuels.

What is 'CREW'? |
CREW stands for claim, reasoning, evidence and warrant. We used this acronym to help us remember the points of an effective argument. This is the document my group worked on throughout the week. My work is in dark purple.

Reflection |
In this mini project, I learned how to debate formally. I am most proud of being the only team who beat the final overall winning team in the first round of debate. The most challenging part of this task was the group work. We were assigned this document on Tuesday to be turned in Friday. At the beginning, my group agreed on dividing the work up evenly so we would all do one reason for every pro and con. I ended up working 6+ hours outside of school doing my work alone. One group member didn't pull their weight, so I had to do some of it for them so we would have evidence for the debate. This really put us at a disadvantage because he ended up winging it and arguing with false information, which resulted in losing. If I were to do this project again, I would spend more time on questions 1,3 and 5 because those were the ones we debated with.
