Project Process The purpose of this project was to learn about different native plants, how to grow them and why they're important. Here are the steps we took to complete this project: first we went down into the chaparral and collected some clippings of native plants. Next, we dug up some dirt from the chaparral and tested it to see what kind of soil we have here locally, and other types of soils. Then we watched Dirt! The Movie and a powerpoint. We took notes on these. After that, we created stipple art images from pictures of our actual plant we picked as a group. Towards the end, we went on a field trip to the Chula Vista Nature Center and answered questions on the environment and animals (who's ever group
got the most questions right, they one a prize. Our group won!). Finally, we had an exhibition on everything we did, with our plant and stipple art. |
What I learned |
Native plants are important/beneficial because they attract animals/bugs that other plants can not. Abiotic factors influence an environment in these ways: weather; only some plants can survive in certain conditions. Temperature; not very many plants can survive in certain climates. Soil is made up of organisms, carbon, water, and oxygen. Composting is a good idea because you can create fresh and nutritious soil for your plants. I learned that my group members and I work well together when we research because we divide the work and trade answers. At the Chula Vista Nature Center, I learned that The Black Clapper Rail is endangered. During the exhibition, I had the chance to tell visitors where our groups' plant was and what its name means. I learned that exhibitions are important because they can show guests what we are doing and learned during the project.

Reflection |
After completing this project, I feel really good about my project and how I have learned so many types of native plants. The biggest challenge of this project was when Moosa Creek Nursery didn't have our plant because that meant that we had to do a lot of research over again. The most fun part of this project was going to the Chula Vista Nature Center because I like to look at all of the different animals there. The worst part of this project was having to work on our project at home because we could only contact certain people because some of their phones were not working or they did not have a computer. So the rest of the group had to do the work and the other person got to relax. I think I did well on this project because I did not even know what native plants were before until we started this project. A part of this project I wish was different is the time we watched Dirt The Movie. We only watched half, and I wanted to watch all of it. If I could do this project again, I would pick a different plant to avoid doing work over again.
